A few weeks ago I mentioned a few jobseeking myths. This morning I read again the most commonly over-used myth around.
It was in the newspaper, and the reporter said “Well, everyone knows it is illegal to shout ‘Fire’ in a crowded movie theater.†You can read this statement almost daily in articles, and it always stated with such earnestness and believeablity.
If one can’t shout “fire!†in a crowded movie theater, then where could possibly be a better place to shout “fire†in order to save people?
The original quote came from Oliver Wendell Holmes who wrote that “The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic.†Somehow the word “falsely†has been removed from everyday vernacular.
What other myths are out there, I am wondering now.
