A few weeks ago I mentioned a few jobseeking myths. This morning I read again the most commonly over-used myth around.

It was in the newspaper, and the reporter said “Well, everyone knows it is illegal to shout ‘Fire’ in a crowded movie theater.” You can read this statement almost daily in articles, and it always stated with such earnestness and believeablity.

If one can’t shout “fire!” in a crowded movie theater, then where could possibly be a better place to shout “fire” in order to save people?

The original quote came from Oliver Wendell Holmes who wrote that “The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic.” Somehow the word “falsely” has been removed from everyday vernacular.

What other myths are out there, I am wondering now.
