“I’m such an idiot.”

One hole left at the US Open, a nice comfortable lead.  Only about 30 million people watching, thousands standing nearby watching.  Me: Oh No…PHIL!!!  OK, you can recover from THAT where-the-hell-is-THAT-going drive, just play it safe, get back on the fairway, play it safe.   Come on, Phil, you can do it.

Tell me he isn’t going to do this.  No way.

Flashback to Snoopy.  Charlie Brown hits a triple, the game is tied, one out…they NEED his run.

Lucy: He won’t try to steal home, will he?

Snoopy: No one is dumb enough to steal home in this situation.

Linus:  He isn’t that dumb, to try and steal.

Charlie Brown, one foot on third, staring intently at the catcher:  I wonder if I should try and steal home?

Phil tries to steal home.  He goes for it.  Fact is, I do this all the time when i play—I go for it.  There is nothing quite like the thrill of threading the ball through and over trees (point to where the green is, again, please) and have it magically land on the green.  Well, I can imagine the thrill of it.  It’s never quite actually happened for me, either.  Tree pinball happens.

But at the freaking US Open?

This is what makes legends in America.  Just watch.  We are all agreeing with him in the moment, “Yes, Phil, you ARE an idiot.”  We like you anyway…and, we love that you went for it.

phil and family  I don’t feel sorry for him.
