My friend, Dr. Ellen Weber at BrainbasedBusiness, makes a good point about my last comment—she asks why not? a second job, and surely some people can do both jobs equally well can’t they?  (Emphasis mine.)

I agree…and I certainly understand the circumstances that lead to people needing that second income.  These are the times we are in.

My comments are more targeted at the 20-somethings, those young adults just getting started in their careers.  More often that not, they need a second job—not for the mortgage, or baby food, but because they want the latest video game, a new car, the latest IPOD, etc.  By getting that second job, often some hourly job that keeps them up late too…they give their current, more adult job short shrift.

Too often I have seen these adults be doing ever so brilliantly in their job, only to discover that they have another job at night, bartending, waitressing, etc.  Don’t get me wrong, these are all noble professions.  And, if you need the money, go for it.

Just recognize that it will impact your current job.  You will be too tired.   Or worse, your manager will start to question your commitment.

Further point:  a second job will not help you get out of financial trouble if you don’t correct the underlying issues.  Maybe you are still living ‘large?’
