One of the best pieces of advice in Dick Bolles’ What Color is Your Parachute? (buy it here) is to interview for the job you actually do not want.
Why? Practice.Â
Why wait for the perfect job opening? Apply at a few jobs that you even might be over-qualified for…and definitely those jobs that you cannot see ever fitting you. The concept is that you will learn how certain phrases, answers, etc come across. This practice interview can do wonders to get you prepared for the prime interview…which you must ace.

Interesting!! I was called to do an interview for a position I do not truly feel I am qualified for, and I’ve been considering if I should even go for this interview as it may seem like a waste of time for the interviewers! However, I think this is about the best advice I have heard on the subject! There is nothing better than experience when trying to do well on interviews. Practice is important. Thank you for this tidbit!
