I was talking to a friend the other day who was lamenting the current situation in real estate. He is selling his condo and makes the point that the big real estate companies should do something, whatever it is, to counteract the negative impressions about real estate. His premise is that often the news media take negative news, in this case about real estate, mortgage rates and so on, and hammer it down our collective throats to the point until we are choking on the “terrible housing crisis.” It makes it all worse. In politics, when an advertising message harms one candidate, the other side is now expected to respond forcefully with a positive message, immediately. Other businesses do it. The Mattel CEO going on YOUTUBE to respond to the lead paint issue in toys comes to mind. But where is the real estate industry? Hiding their heads.
Same with the jobs market. The press is good at scaring us with their sky-is-falling-routine on employment news reporting.

“Ain’t it awful, ain’t it awful?” I hear my Norwegian friends lamenting. “What happens if my company has a lay off? What if what if what if what if.”

Here is the simple truth. More people than ever are working, and more companies are hiring people who will help them get to the next level, whatever that may be. Sure, people lose their jobs every day. That sucks.

But there are lots of companies hiring and wanting to hire great people.
