This post was one of my earliest, a tongue-in-cheek post about delivering phone books. Just this month, March of 2008, it received three more comments.

A Good Second Job–Delivering Phone Books. (July 24, 2006)

Ok, I kid you not.

Here is the deal. You can deliver phone books, the colorful one, and make some extra money. So, to find out about it, I have to go to a meeting…’it’ being so secretive and all. I guess that is why the meeting is in this abandoned warehouse.

First, there are all kinds of rules. Put the books in the plastic bag, leave them on THE HINGE SIDE OF THE DOOR (it is that important), and then fill out your paperwork correctly. They want a first name of each business person who gets the books for the office. This is because the people calling ‘by hand’ (their words, not mine) can verify it all.

You are totally responsible, for your own car, gas, and if you step on flowers in someone’s yard–omg, for the flowers too. If you come near a mailbox, they threaten, the post office will fine YOU $500.

And, you get paid 10 days after you do a route and after you have turned in all the paperwork, and after they have audited the route. I s*** you not.

So, I says, if my son works hard, and is relatively good shape, and hustles, how much can he make? “7-8 bucks an hour, ” says the guy. We are paid 22 cents a book to deliver them, about two cents a pound in another words.

Not counting the hernia expense nor gas.

Oh, one question. “What do we tell the people who ask about re-cycling the books?” says Al Gore (wannabe).

”Tell them to read inside the front cover, it tells them there,” boss guy says.

October 31st, 2007 at 8:22 pm eHello All, Our company ADS Direct Media, delivers door hangers, product samples, and phone books throughout the USA and now moving into Canada.Since the primary content of this message addresses “phone book delivery” my reply will focus on the facts.

    #1 Please understand that phone book dimensions range in sizes of 6 x 9 x 1″ to 8 x 10 x 3″.

#2 Please understand that phone book weights range from 14 oz. to 5 pounds.

#3 Please understand that you might have a 30 to 60 mile round trip from your home office to pick-up books to your assigned delivery zone. This is not a intentional torment, but simply due to availability of commercial warehousing locations which are able to meet our insurance and bonding agreements.

#4 Please understand that the product (phone books) must be protected from all elements of weather, primarily rain and snow, from pick-up to delivery.

#5 Please understand that our customers expect seven day per week delivery, yes this includes weekends, unless severe weather conditions, civil riot, or severe conditions exist.

    # 6 Please understand that even though you might consider it just a telephone book, it is a time sensitive project.

#7 Contracted carriers are assigned delivery zones averaging 1000 books per zone. Our company will always provide you with the dimensions and weight of the book so that you can determine your logistical capabilities or limitations.

    # 8 Phone book delivery can be both tasking and penalizing for contractors who do not study and understand the full logistics of the project.

    # 9 Phone book delivery can be an adventurous, rewarding, and profitable business opportunity for contractors who sincerely study and understand the requirements of our project specifications.

#10 If you commit to our requirement, but fail to deliver, it typically cost our company 2-4 times the agreed upon delivery agreement price per book to complete the mission, and your paycheck will reflect that event.

    Closing Statements:
Based on contractual requirements with our customers, yes, you are required to provide Certificates of Insurance for your delivery vehicles

Please contact me at agodwin@adsmediagroup.com for any further questions or dialogue.
