Cousin Craig farms in north central Kansas. When I say ‘farms,’ he really FARMS. Singlehandedly, he manages, works and farms nearly 3,000 acres. He’s no redneck hillbilly farmer, he has a degree in agriculture, his tractors and combines cost more than some houses and K-State researchers regularly visit him to find out the latest in ‘what works’ out in American agriculture. He is in the futures market because he has to be, with his own labor, product and risk. He’s tan, in shape, laughs a lot, even when he says the cost of the bread wrapper is double the cost of the wheat that makes up your loaf of whole wheat bread.
His biggest problem? Cost of fertilizer? “When I get the tank filled early in the morning with fertilizer, by the time I get back mid afternoon for my second load, the price has gone UP over $2,000,” he says. The price of fertilizer for those who don’t follow these things tripled in a single year. How about gas? It is not unusual for him to burn through 500 gallons of diesel fuel per day. You do the math. Each of his 16 pivot irrigation systems has a small generator capable of powering a small neighborhood and an un-guarded 1,000 gallon diesel tank that sits nearby, with about $5,000 worth of fuel. He is somewhat nervous that someone will steal his generators, basically made of copper “at $3 a pound,” and his diesel fuel. The Kansas state legislature is considering a bill that will add back the road tax portion on his farm diesel bill. With an ever decreasing number of farm aware legislators, chances are good he will be paying another 50 cents a gallon or so in taxes to help pay for roads his equipment never gets on.
But his biggest problem is that he can’t find help. He says farmers in his area have been trying and trying and trying. They just can’t find anyone to move to a small town where it is four hours to the nearest decent airport. He thinks he could hire two, maybe four people full time.
Must be the wages? “Can’t be that,” he says, “I will nearly pay whatever it takes…with overtime, they could make almost $80,000 a year.” On top of that, he will pay all the health care coverage and let people live in one of the houses he owns in his local small town, “just because I thought it would help me attract a family.” Beef is free too, and he doesn’t need to go to Costco to buy it for the lucky family, either.
Skill? “I can teach them easily,” he says. “My equipment is goof proof, it has to be.” By that, he means that an employee need not even know how to drive straight, the tractor is guided by a sophisticated guidance sytem hooked into three satellites. “If I overlap six inches on fertilizer or seeding,” he says, “it wastes nearly $10,000.” This is a big business, and Craig has it pretty much figured out. “I need someone who is willing to work 18-20 hour days during the big work periods, like at harvest, planting, fertilizing,” he says. Another person or two will help him get back into the seed business, a natural extension that is slightly more profitable.
His wife teaches first grade (“i just love teaching”) at the local school, where each student gets personal attention from not only the teacher but from the folks in town. One grade equals one classroom in small town Kansas, twenty kids per class; and “it’s like a town full of baby sitters watching out for everyone else’s kid,” she says.
I said I would help him find someone to help out. Know anyone?

Would he hire a seasonal helper? I’d do it for 6 months to a year just for the experience/money.
I think a year would be about the minimum amount of time you would need to commit to…but, it is not the Army, you can always leave I suppose.
For anyone serious about this, or learning more, just drop me a letter and maybe your resume and I will send it to Craig. Good luck,
GLH
I am someone deeply concerned about genetically modified organisms, global climate change, Republicans and their war crime lust, American racists and their blood lust, false Christians and their end of days lust, and the economic death spiral caused by decades of Conservative thought.
Are reality based people like me even welcome in Kansas?
Sure. Absolutely.
@vegetariantoo wow. You sound like a happy, warm, fuzzy person all around. I’d just love to hang out with someone as caring and concerned about the Earth as you! I’m sure Kansas is just dying to have more of your ilk.
Why doesn’t he hire (legally, of course) some workers from Mexico? Is he a racist?
Actually, Marcus, I think they are very accepting and would welcome her just as they would anyone.
Perhaps you could use foreign handwork.
The current term of art for people like me it bitter, marcus.
Did you catch that Trotta commentary on FOX recently? How about that steady stream of hate mongering from Coulter, O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Hagee, Robertson, and oh so many more. Have you spent any electrons being snide about that? How about the active desecration of the American way by rabid Conservatives and their ilk? Have people like you, marcus, spoken up about the Bush administrations war crimes? Their insane economic policies. Their outright looting?
No, you wouldn’t want to hang out with someone like me, at least not right now, because I am sick and tired of being polite about the smelly elephant in the room. I’m sorry if that upsets you.
There has to be more to the story. Since the wages he’s offering are 2.5-3.5 times the going rate for experienced help here in Michigan I can’t understand why he is having difficulty.
I think he needs to take a good look at himself and he will find the answer to why he can’t find qualified help.
wow! i want that kind of life. im 25 and im getting fat, a lot of hard labor would be good for me. seriously, i want that job.

[...] Recently, I went back home to central Kansas for a family reunion. My cousin Craig is a farmer and his main problem, he tells me—the “employment media expert”—is that no matter what he does, no matter where he advertises, he simply cannot find anyone who wants to move to smalltown Kansas to do farmwork. He pays well, $50,000 to $80,000/year, free health care and will even let the worker live in a house, for free no less. I wrote about it here. [...]
I would love to learn more about this. I’m in Michigan, have a family and very much in need of a job. Let me know what kind of information you need from me. Thanks
Where in Kansas is this? I know north central but what is the nearest town? I live in the Minneapolis area now and want to move to a rural area. I am a very hard worker and have worked for a landscape co. for 6 years but am very underpaid so I am looking elsewhere and this caught my eye.

my husband and i are very interested in this job. please email us to tell us more on how to go about something like this. i’ve, personally, always wanted to work on a farm.
I live right down the road and have 10 years- 5 years straight with a family operation of 500 head of red Angus/ Gelbvieh . I am looking to get away from the old people. Is he still looking?
Very interested. I am 18 with some farm experience. Please send me more information if he is still looking, or if you know of another job like this.
It’s been some time sinse this was posted, is the job still available?
I was born and raised on a Dairy farm in Mich. So I do have some experience and I know that farm work. “despite new technology” and no matter what type, is far from being labeled as “easy”.
I’m a “Small Engine Repair Technician” by trade. and a self learner by tradition.
I now live in SW Oklahoma, but I’m willing to relocate.
I’ve always been interested in farming and being “mechanically inclined” as I am, possibly learn how to repair farm equipment on the side.
,please sent me more information and a more detailed description of this or any work now in or that may come in question.
Thank You
Mike

While I was reading through the posting I was having a hard time understanding, why a person is having a hard time finding help when they are willing to pay all living expensives. I would love to move home to Kansas, currently I am locked in to a contract for six more years and seriously what good is a man’s word if he does not do what he says he is going to do. If your cousin is still loking for help I would be more than wiling to discuss it with him.
Im just looking for some farm work any kind. I bull ride sometimes so im willing to get in with cows. I lived in La Grande Or for a while and loved it. Now I live on my parents 5 acre farm and buck 60 acres of hay every summer by hand. I love hard work and aint afraid of getting my hands dirty. Ive had a little experience with combines and tractors. Im decent on horse back also. So im willing to help free if ive got free room and board, maybe a pick up. Im 18 years old.
I’ve been trying to find a way of starting my own small family farm and found out it is almost impossible for a single mom of a second grader. I am now looking to get hired on a farm, and looking for housing also.
I would be very interested in doing this type of work but it sounds to good to be true. What is the catch. Free housing , free health care, plus 50 thou a year. Can it be husband and wife.
I have been married 19yrs ,i have 3 kids,and a dog,i’m experienced in milking, calf feeding ,i’m hard working,but i’m not bilingual,i’m willing to relocate,email me anytime

I’m very interested in this if there is a position still available.
I am exmilitary and grew up on a farm (Beef Cattle, hogs and lots of corn)
Please respond if still available.
Wondering if this person may still be hiring..
I am looking for a live on site possition
I am looking for a good strong Job in witch i beleave that you have offered.I am a strong hard worker in all kinds of situations that may come to hand when on a site. I am also a fast ,6ft7in,and 324lb smart team worker.
Thank you for your time….
I grew up in a farming and ranching family. I moved away from that but have always returned. I was a ranch foreman for 3 years but that was 1981 through 1984. I have recently accepted a buy out package from the company I worked at for 23 years and want and need to get back to what I love. I have spent summers hauling hay and harvesting sorghum and corn down in Texas. I am not afraid of the hard work or the long hours. I know what it takes to make it in the agriculture business. The summers are hot and the days long. The winters are cold and those days never long enough.
My wife and I have 3 children, all grown and on their own. We currently live in Colorado but am more than willing to relocate.
I am in good health and have the medical records if needed.
If this posting is still valid, I would like the opportunity to talk with either you or Cousin Craig. Please respond to the E-mail address I posted.
I would like to know if there is still a position open either with the man your talking about or any one else you may know of . I grew up farming and work part time on a cattle farm now , in the area i live you you just cant buy land to farm and what is out there to be leased is tied up to other farmers who are having a trying time holding on to it due to land prices . I am sure that i would fill the expectations of any who need the help . Please get in touch with me if you can help .
Thanks
Joey
Does this farmer still need help? If yes, please email me so i know where to send my resume.
Experienced farm labor here – willing to relocate – if this person is still looking or help, I’m interested.
I am 20 years old, i have lived in illinois my whole life and i have helped my father run the farm since i was eleven, it was all i have ever wanted to do since i was a little kid was farm. However we just recently lost the farm to a divorce that wasn’t handled very well on anyones behalf. I would love to accept the job if you are still hiring by any chance i would be very happy to relocate. I have a cdl license which would help greatly in the fall with harvest, i have some experience with livestock but still room to learn. I have run the combine for about 6 years now in the fall along with driving a semi to haul grain to the local elevators. I have a decent amount of mechanic experience. I’v been taught very well about machenery maintenence, and probably have around 8 to 10 thousand hours of farm machenery operating experience. please let me know if you are interested or not.
