Over at US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT today, I list seven things that good football (insert your own sport here) coaches do.
It is all pretty high-minded stuff, and I actually left out a lot that could have made the ‘list.’ But space prohibited a more lengthy post.
I’m not sure how it fits but football coaches are also among the most quotable group in the country. Somewhere, someplace today I bet some business leader is quoting his favorite coach at some management meeting. I love it.
Here are a few of my favorite football coach quotes:
If worms carried pistols, birds wouldn’t eat ‘em.
Darrell RoyalMarvin Lewis, suggesting that coaches should be able to add monikers on players uniforms, like “He Hate Me” during training camp, he suggested the following examples: “He Doesn’t Listen,”; He Jumps Offsides”; and “He Can’t See.”
Oiler coach Bum Phillips: When asked by Bob Costas why he takes his wife on all the road trips, Phillips responded, “Because she is too damn ugly to kiss goodbye.”
Duffy Daugherty: “A tie is like kissing your sister.”
Jim Finks, when asked after a loss what he thought of the officiating: “I’m not allowed to comment on lousy referees.”
Motivation is simple. You eliminate those who are not motivated.
Lou HoltzHe’s not very fast, but maybe Elizabeth Taylor can’t sing.
Darrell RoyalOnce you agree upon the price you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent’s pressure, and the temporary failures.
Vince LombardiThe secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven.
Knute RockneWe have a strange and wonderful relationship – he’s strange and I’m wonderful.

Well, it isn’t exactly drawn from the sports world. This does keep me motivated very well in varied circumstances.
It’s actully Limbaugh, I think
“Find a way
to do what you love,
or find a way
to love what you do”
