According to Mike Vance, early head of creativity at Walt Disney World, there are two ways of being creative in business: Thinking up new things or re arranging old things in new ways.
I bet countless people even this morning are thinking to themselves, possibly in the shower where we do our best singing and thinking, how they can improve that one little thing they observed yesterday. Therein lies the secret in how new businesses are created. It’s an near obnoxious drive to make something better. Even a slight incremental improvement.
Assuming there are plenty of things that need improving and we can all see them clearly in the shower, what’s keeping us from doing them?
You realize, I am sure, that this is not JUST about starting a new company. It’s about acting on your own abilities to make your current job better.

It’s also about confidence and courage and realising that sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and plunge in but if you REALLY can’t then find some support to share your vision or goal or ambition. Create a partnership, a team or a group – there’s strength in numbers. That said, having walked away twice from challenging jobs with barely a look over my shoulder there is always a point when having tried and tried again it might be better to move on?
My work colleagues are a laptop and about 4 notepads that travel with me everywhere. Some days the best source of inspiration are the shower, the woodpile, a walk, and even a run to the store for the wife. I have most recently found out about some local meet-up groups of like-minded folks.
I am constantly going over ideas and trying not to compare myself to others. The pressure that I put on myself is all in my head, not theirs. Ideas are like waves, they are meant to be rode out. All the way out. Then I can say if the idea worked. We neglect an important element of our brain, it’s called processing. My wife knows me well enough to ask me a question and come back later after I’ve had a bit to ponder. I’ve learned to live with it.
Thanks!
