Jeanne…bidding war? I am afraid the number of bidders would be awfully small, so let’s atart the bidding high. What’s eBay call it?..a high reserve.
Glad to amuse you this morning, my day is now complete.
I love it! Thanks for the excellent visual (I love graphs – include them in my resumes! – very visceral). Though I’ve used ‘branding’ in various articles in the past, I’ve pulled away somewhat, of late, preferring substituting language that is pragmatic and/or otherwise descriptive.
Don’t get me wrong, this may sound indecisive or non-committal, I’ll still use ‘brand,’ ‘branding,’ etc. from time to time in the career-search arena (people seem to be expecting it), but my goal is a mantra of focused language, tailored to individual persons’ value and value proposition statements (even ‘value proposition’ can get over-used, but is a relevant phrase).
Thanks for the ever so regular and attention-grabbing insights! The combination of levity and thought-stimulating/provoking commentary is welcomed, GL!
GL, thanks for calling B.S. on personal branding. Hell, that diagram says it all! I don’t even talk about personal branding. I think it’s crap. We used to call it our reputation, and we used to actually build it, not market it. We used to let people recognize our reputation, not shove it in their faces. Some of us still adhere to that personal obligation if we want to get anywhere.
GL, good ‘shortcut’ point re: reputation building/sustaining.
I have several esteemed careers colleagues with their Reach Personal Branding Strategist credentials, and kudos to them! They worked hard to get there – they provide great value to their clients from their specialized training. I don’t dismiss the term (personal branding) completely, but I do believe it has created a zeal and sometimes fury of its own that sometimes needs wrangled down a bit
As well, marketing one’s career or reputation isn’t so bad, in this big ole’ global and sometimes impersonal world. So, though I like and understand Nick Corcodilos’ assertion that he doesn’t even talk about personal branding, I don’t necessarily agree that “marketing” one’s reputation is a no-no. Not everyone’s reputation fosters a following without a little marketing and / or self-promotion, even if it is done invisibly, via partnerships, or by way of other channels — including “volunteerism” and other selfless functions that often have self-promotional undertones, but are not overtly self-promotional.
There is such a craze of social media, marketing, self-promotion, branding, value-communicating activity going on out there – I’m in the thick of it, too! Sorting it all out, I think, means having these tough conversations.
Thanks Ellen. YOu all know dont you that I am not the artist behind the sketches. Brenda Anderson, a very good graphic artist who creates help wanted ads for us all day long, most graciously makes handmade drawings legible. She uses one of those software program thing-ys.

GL, not sure the chart I’d draw would look quite the same as yours, but it’s an interesting way to perceive personal branding.
You have personalized your own brand in a very fun way – with the dog and bone. Your images really say it all at times. You have truly marketed your brand consistently and well.
If anything has made me feel unsure of myself as a jobhunter of late, it’s that I feel like I need to work on my brand. And then I do a little but it feels false because I’m not a product or a service, I am a person. I am also one of those people with a number of skills that can transfer into different positions. If I market myself as a square peg I will lose out on some perfectly good round holes. Or something like that.
Thanks Robyn, our dog has given us some added fun things to do along our journey.
Diana–that is what I think is wrong with the branding mumbo jumbo. It is like Nick said above, we used to call it reputation and we built it, we didn’t market it.
It’s like the younger workers asking all the time if they are “on the career path.” If you have to ask, you are not on it. Same with YOUR brand…sure there are some things you can do, but most of all it has to do with being authentic and living a life of good character, one in which you don’t embarrass your family, for example, and…wait for it, your own dad.

Tough luck, GL. You know what they say about timing? I say put Billy Bob Thorton bottom center, right on the line. He was a real putz in a recent interview. I know he put a small amount of thought into it, and he just cemented my opinion of him. He’s worked with great people, but he is rude.
I have to admit Branding is everything in business, but without any means of strategic marketing be it online or offline, your brand still would draw less customers.
I’ve known this site http://brandmelive.com/blog1/power-coaching-call-series/ that helps and guides and individual or startup company on how to create your own unique brand that stands out from the rest. In less than a month, I assure you, you will start to experience great amount of success on your brand or business with the efforts you put in. Believe me, I’m one of the million that benefited from that site.

GL, you amuse me mightily. What might one need to do to inherit your spiral notes? Maybe we can start a bidding war-I’ll start.

Thanks Jacqui. I appreciate your insights and how you use graphics in your own work. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Like any shortcut, reading about building your personal brand might get you “there,” but it’s hard to shortcut your way to a great reputation.

I like your latest two sketchpad drawings–very cool. Could go well on digg actually. You should think about that.
Thanks Matt. I do not post my own stuff on DIGG. You can. If you so choose.
Another cool take on a topic that’s creating quite the buzz – thanks GL. Great stuff.
Interestingly Robyn wrote on the topic today at http://twurl.nl/15ewl0 in ways that hinge quite nicely onto your sketch also:-)
As for me, I finally did taxes — so had a go at taxes – brains – and savants! OK – no extra breaks for the brand either:-)
Hey, keep those cool sketches coming GL!

[...] Personal Branding effectiveness is inversely proportional to the time you spend on it. Funny graphic from GL Hoffman [...]

Hi Madaboutewe—Isn’t it funny how some “stars” make you think “Why him?” I know plenty of homely people who mumble but they are not actors.
