Boy, the advice you get on the internets is staggering. How to, why to, where to, what to. And, it increases exponitially daily. How can we possibly keep up?
Quik anser: We can’t.
The missing link in all the advice-givers’ commentary is the concluding-missing line–Then You Go Work Your Ass Off. Nothing else matters and nothing else has as dramatic effect on any advice that you get. There is a major disconnect, it’s as if reading the advice is enough. It isn’t. It is easier to read the advice, nod your head in agreement and move on.
“Hmmm, ok…jobseeking is a day-long workday effort. Got it.”
“Hmmm, ok…Give constant feedback to Gen y’ers. Got it.”
“Hmmm, ok…Learn new skills to become indispensable. Got it.”
“Hmmm, ok…Here’s how Twitter works. Got it.”
“Hmmm, ok…What that extra 50 pounds means to your heart. Got it.”
I could further expound on this, but you understand where I am going with this, right? In the future, when you finish reading or listening to your next thing on how you can get better or do more, just repeat after me—and then, “go work your ass off.”
Saying it out loud works best.

Darn, I read this JUST as I was getting ready to read another article instead of doing something. You showed up just in time.
Thanks for keeping everyone centered.
Ed. Note: This would go right before the second part of this, which would be “After the meeting, someone has to do the work.” Agree?
Nothing is good in excess, not even Margaritas! How to article are useful fodder for thought. Getting shit done is a more useful process in the long term (Technical term – GSD)
Hi GL, glad to know I am not the only one feeling the need for a few extra hours to finish my always growing, daily To Do list.
Thanks,
Kris
Thanks, Kelli…funny, and I am glad to have made it ‘just in time.” Others—stop by Kelli’s blog, it is a real treat….maybe we can convince her to write more often!!! But thanks, truly, Kelli for stopping by. http://www.DigDeepThinker.com is awesome.
Brilliance. Sheer, simple brilliance. The “go work your ass off” part escapes most of us, up to and including me. THANKS for the “thunk on the side of head”.
Michael—your GSD should be on cube walls all over America. Priceless!
Kris…We all can use a few extra hours, can’t we? Luckily, the older you get the more you can simply ‘forget” to do.
Dawn…I think it is interesting that the people who LEAST need this advice (OMG more advice?) –like YOU…are the ones who think they do.
Love this. You always say what needs to be said.
Just go work your ass off.
GL,
Sometimes it’s simply a way of avoiding the manual labor of the mind and/or body.
So true – we all can get caught up in analysis paralysis. Reading this, surfing that, digesting something else, going aha, saying “I agree” and adding something more (we’re all so wise and just must offer our tidbits of gold – me included
As such, I’m turning off Twitter, and this is my last ‘blog’wandering’ for at least another 2 hours (there, I published my promise!).
But I will be back, because it’s that balance of inspiration and hard work that I think truly propels results! (with a dose of hope and optimism!)
Now, I’m going to go ‘work at least a little bit of my behind off.’
Jacqui
GL, I am one lucky so and so. I don’t have to work! Period. Good advise though, one I would take if ever needed. Shall check out Kelli’s blog.
Could it be that all these “advice givers” are trying to make a buck? Are they exploiting those that have been led to believe that they need to fix themselves or the societal norm comprised of those that believe it is “all about them”?
A wise man once told me “Only give advice when asked”. Where have we gone off course? Love your posts!
So true. Someone said that success was 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, if I’ve got the quote right.
Do you think it’s because we don’t want anyone to feel too disheartened that we omit to say that they’re going to have to work their arses off? Or do people truly believe that life is just one big quick fix, a “just like that” as Tommy Cooper used to say?
Hannah…that is great advice but nearly impossible to heed, isn’t it? We all love to give advice. I am not sure about your last point, as to why? I think we all know that achievement takes hard work, it is enticing to think that, SOMEWHERE, there is an easy way to riches and fame. Alas, there is not.
Hello Clare..thanks for stopping by again. This was one of those posts that is another blinding flash of the obvious…but we all need to be reminded that success does require some effort. Myself included.
