It was a skillful act to say the least, and maybe even a brave one…certainly heroic, as many of the 150+ passengers will now attest.

But, we still have yet to hear from Sully, a member of the Class of 1973, USAFA. He was scheduled to appear on the Today Show on Monday with Matt Lauer, best friend of Tom Cruise, but was forced to cancel at the last minute because “the Pilot’s Union said the investigation was on-going.” Spare me.

Well, no kidding, the investigation will be on-going for a year, I bet. But heroic moments only last for short periods of time (PR Rule Number One), and one must keep that in mind. Just think of the potential goodwill wasted and squandered by not hearing from Captain Sully sooner. His quiet demeanor and natural humility could have done a lot for airline travel, first responders, pilots, and even for the embattled and understaffed air traffic controllers. We were left waiting, waiting, waiting. Even so, I know he will be an articulate spokesman for those things, but so far, the Pilot’s Union is evidently in charge of him. Too bad. The half life for American heroes is awfully short.

It’s like Tom Brady winning the Super Bowl and the NFL says he can’t talk to the press until after all the films have been reviewed to make sure played well. We love our heroes but we don’t like them being managed.

Come on Sully. Don’t let them be the boss of you.
