Every marketer wants to find the magic way to financial heaven, and the rage is all twittering now, so that must be it. Toby Dayton in his DIGGINGS blog analyzes just one of the industries now fully engaging twitterers on Twitter.

His analysis should be read with an eye toward your own business and category. Or are you blinding following the herd of lemmings off the cliff?

Here is the link to his post….and here is something on US NEWS today that also references it.

But don’t you just wonder about things like the Siemens scandal, Bernard Madoff, Tom Petters and even Governor Rod “Don’t Touch My Hair” Blagojevich.

My point I tried to make over at US NEWS today is that this sort of thing has happened before, maybe not as outrageous, but it is not new….this outlandish greed program and acting all above the law crap,… it’s been happening for a long time, even before teapot had a dome.

How do we as a society fix it or do we?

The first thing to do, I suggest, is punish them fast and aggressively. Yeah, they are innocent until proven guilty. But just maybe we should teach some important lessons here, Is branding illegal? I am thinking a big G…for greed…right on their forehead. Except for the Guv: Give him a crew cut with a G in his hairline, forever.

After the punishment phase is over…what can we do to make sure this does not happen even more in the future? (read the USNEWS piece, too)

(hat tip: Toby at Diggings)

It is all pretty high-minded stuff, and I actually left out a lot that could have made the ‘list.’ But space prohibited a more lengthy post.

I’m not sure how it fits but football coaches are also among the most quotable group in the country. Somewhere, someplace today I bet some business leader is quoting his favorite coach at some management meeting. I love it.

Here are a few of my favorite football coach quotes:

If worms carried pistols, birds wouldn’t eat ‘em.
Darrell Royal

Marvin Lewis, suggesting that coaches should be able to add monikers on players uniforms, like “He Hate Me” during training camp, he suggested the following examples: “He Doesn’t Listen,”; He Jumps Offsides”; and “He Can’t See.”

Oiler coach Bum Phillips: When asked by Bob Costas why he takes his wife on all the road trips, Phillips responded, “Because she is too damn ugly to kiss goodbye.”

Duffy Daugherty: “A tie is like kissing your sister.”

Jim Finks, when asked after a loss what he thought of the officiating: “I’m not allowed to comment on lousy referees.”

Motivation is simple. You eliminate those who are not motivated.
Lou Holtz

He’s not very fast, but maybe Elizabeth Taylor can’t sing.
Darrell Royal

Once you agree upon the price you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent’s pressure, and the temporary failures.
Vince Lombardi

The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven.
Knute Rockne

We have a strange and wonderful relationship – he’s strange and I’m wonderful.
Mike Ditka

Do you have any favorite sports quotes that help keep you motivated?

Years ago, I heard somewhere that it does not really matter what is said about you in the media, good or bad, because people forget the context, and just remember that you were in the ‘news.’ I bet Madonna doesn’t even care today that the paper is running an unflattering picture of her coming out of the gym. So when Gawker.com ran a story about one of my advice posts for 20-somethings…I figured it was a win-win. After all, Gawker is one of the top 20 blogs in the WORLD.

That’s the silver lining for me because Hamilton Nolan really ripped me a new one when they reviewed my US NEWS posts about how to manage 20-somethings. Most of the gawker readers seemingly agree…it generated nearly 16,000 views. He makes some relevant suggestions, and there are good ideas among the 126 comments as well, but the overwhelming point made in this Gawker story is….um, er, um…..what do you think the point is?

You can read the entire article here, or for your convenience, I have re-printed the first page of the article below.

From Gawker.com, by Hamilton Nolan

Totally irrelevant newsweekly-turned-listicle-magazine US News & World Report brings you a straight-talking list of ten tips for managing an office full of 20-somethings, according to old business dude G.L. Hoffman. His pointers include “Add value,” “Let them use their media,” “They want standards,” and “Expect varied, non-chain-of-command type communications.” Whatever that means. As an actual 20-something, I’m communicating up G.L. Hoffman’s chain of command that this list is straight up crapola. You are old and your advice is dorky, Mr. Hoffman! And too long—we 20-somethings have no attention span (or respect for our elders), due to drug use. After the jump, five real tips for managing an office full of 20-somethings, should you ever find yourself in such an unlucky position:

Food: Can we get some free food up in here?

Shut Up: Dude, you are old and we already know how to do this stupid job, so please just shut up.

Don’t Sweat It: Don’t sweat it, man. We got it all under control. Don’t freak out.

Money: Pay us more, why don’t you?

Work: It totally sucks. Nothing you can do about it
